When fifteen-year-old Summer comes home from ballet class to find her mom packing, she's horrified to discover their destination is a creepy town without cell towers or internet but what is there makes up for it: the world-renowned Galina Ballet Company she's dreamed of dancing in since she was ten.
Summer scores an audition, leading to a starring role in The Nutcracker. Her life is on track to perfection until a fellow ballet girl goes missing and is found with her chest torn open. Then another one is found. Some seem to think the wolves who come down from Canada to forage during the winter are to blame for the deaths. Others believe an old curse has returned.
To get her mind off the deaths, Summer puts her energy into practicing with Devon, her Nutcracker Prince whose charm and lopsided grin have mesmerized her.
When another missing girl is found dead with similar injuries, the police want to speak to Devon's father who was recently released from prison for murder.
Devon confesses to Summer that he's found blood on his own hands and he can't remember what happened. He's afraid he's inherited his father's killing ways.
Summer has to figure out what really happened to the girls and who is responsible for their deaths, because she knows in her heart it's not the boy she loves.
