This novel is set against the historical background of Alto Lario, the northern part of Lake Como, in our time. A modern story is linked to various stories in the past. The Lake Como, called Lario in the past, becomes a protagonist and its millennial history weaves itself into Milena's personal story. Milena is a young woman whose grandparents were originally from that area and later emigrated to Dublin. Lario (the Lake Como) and Milena develop a strong bond of friendship. The lake tells her many stories which refer to its various historical periods and awakens in Milena the scattered fragments of her life which she has deeply buried in her subconscious, stubbornly filing them away.
The young woman is fascinated by the lake's strong magnetic voice. She listens to it, trying to interpret the mysterious messages of its stories and to make sense of her own personal hidden fears. Many unpleasant memories slowly surface in the young woman's mind until she can decipher the meaning of Lario's words, leading her to reassemble the puzzle of the inexplicable facts, which have caused her great suffering since her childhood. Finally, her terrible childhood trauma, which she had accurately removed, suddenly resurfaces.
The various themes dealt with in this novel are relevant in our contemporary world but also refer to historical periods which marked Alto Lario for centuries. Above all, the region's deep-rooted Celtic spirit is revealed, that imprint of ancient spirituality, of the sacred heritage of the Celtic culture, still palpable to this day along the lake shores and on the surrounding mountains, which sets the lake like an emerald.
