Although the Revolution of 1905 was a decisive point in modern Russian history, it has remained in the shadow of 1917, both in the popular mind and in scholarly research. This study is the first comprehensive account of that upheaval to appear in any Western language in a generation. Soviet scholars, and many scholars in the West, echo Lenin's claim that the Revolution of 1905 was the 'dress rehearsal' for the Bolshevik Seizure of power in 1917. In this first of two projected volumes, the author argues otherwise: that the events of 1905 marked a critical juncture in the history of Russia when several possible paths were opened up for the century.
